I'm going to use and instead of but when it comes to building a sentence with two conflicting ideas because that is actually closer to the way I usually feel.
Example:
It was an excellent day outside but I was still feeling like shit.
is now
It was an excellent day outside and I was still feeling like shit.
Using but in such sentences is something I've learned to do from reading other people's work. It seems like copied behaviour, for me at least.

Mutton
On my way from the Cant. station back to Yelahanka I see hoards and hoards of sheep all lined up. And sheep-keepers, wrapped in woolen shawls (a thought here diverges to that chapter on animal husbandry that we had in school - about using all parts of the animal, etc.), are waiting for people to come and buy them off - last chance for the big sacrifice tomorrow. There must be close to 500 sheep on that one stretch of road near JC Nagar. I'm wondering, what do they do if they have leftover sheep? Take them back and bring them again next year? Cut them up anyway? It's Bakrid tomorrow. Whether or not you're buying into the story of Ibrahim, mutton's going to be expensive.
